This report analyzes 15 pipeline locations to obtain the secondary stresses from pressure, thermal, and external loading. The purpose of this study was to examine the significance of these stresses in relation to the design and operation of pipelines. The results show that stresses imposed on pipe by normal construction and handling practices are often quite high and can be detrimental in the operation of a pipeline if they are not relieved by yielding or deflection during construction or proof-testing.
